October 2001 Corinthian Sailing Club White Rock Lake Dallas, TX

From the Commodore
Fellow Corinthian Sailors -

Last night I was out in the garage cleaning, puttering and reflecting on the events of the last couple of weeks. As I sorted and swept, the tremendous loss, all the fear and uncertainty of the future had me a bit depressed. Suddenly my ear caught the sound of leaves rustling and the crisp fall air swirled through the open door washing me in it's coolness and bringing with it a flood of fond memories - the beauty of the quiet lake on an Autumn morning, the view of bright white sails against a deep blue sky while hiking in a stiff breeze, and the warm camaraderie of good friends and competition. I put away the broom and with my spirits lifted, started checking gear and preparing for the State Fair Regatta this weekend. I've decided to focus on the good stuff. I hope you will come down to the lake and join me.

From the Rear Commodore for Membership
I have finished mailing the late renewals' membership packets. So if you haven't gotten yours, let me know.

Go e-mail! If you got this newsletter via e-mail...THANKS! You're helping the environment and the club. If you got this newsletter via Snail-Mail...please consider using e-mail. It is faster in addition to saving money and trees! Send me your e-mail address and I'll get it in the database. I can be reached via e-mail at recapen@earthlink.net. Remember, e-mail is not just for Newsletters -.we can send all kinds of stuff out. If you would prefer not to use e-mail - we will still accommodate that...just remember to keep us informed of address changes either way. I will shortly be sending out the club roster to all members - now is the time to make sure your contact info is correct. This can be checked on the website at www.cscsailing.org/club_roster.html.

Thanks...Ralph

What’s New on the CSC Website
Information on the Past Commodore's Dinner including a request to RSVP, the Club and Lake Championship Regattas NOR, SMU Frozen Hate Regatta, and Open House NOR are all posted.

Check out the super new user-friendly, searchable, printable CSC membership roster that Lisle Eddy developed for our website. The club roster has been updated with latest membership database. Lisle has added expanded search capability and a help function. As a side note - to send an email, just click on the blue underlined member's name.

The links page has been expanded, reformatted, and local merchants have been added. Let the webmaster know if you would like to recommend a local merchant that you think would be of general interest to the membership.

We have new, expanded weather page and a completely redone club history that will be added during October. If you have a boat, davit or equipment that you would like to buy, lease or sell, the forums can help you. You can also get your questions answered, seek a crew, or post your fleet duty roster. Of course, the events, regatta notices and newsletter archive pages are updated regularly.

New Timer Makes Race Committee Easy
A full automatic, electronic starting timer has been purchased for the club. It greatly simplifies the committee's job in conducting races using the new starting sequence. It does everything except sight the line and raise the flags, and Bob Gough is working on that. The timer will be kept in a box with the radios. Either Bob, or the ERC, will show committee members how to use it. It is real easy.

PS, all committee boats now have Bimini tops.

Adams and Mallory Cup Results
The Adams US Women's Championship and Mallory US Men's Championship Regattas were scheduled to start on Sept 11 at Lake Ray Hubbard. Due to the tragic events that day, many participants were unable to reach Dallas. Five of 11 women's teams and 8 of 10 men's teams did make it. The 2001 Adams and Mallory Cups have been postponed indefinitely. Those present sailed a fine, hard fought, but unofficial, US Championship Regatta after delaying a day. Scott Mauney, Kelly Gough and Michael Mittman represented CSC and Area F in the regatta. Bob Gough was PRO and John Diggins was the chief judge. The following are excerpts from a speech delivered at the awards ceremony by Kelson Elam of RCYC.

I'm sure someone will go home and tell their family " I spent a year in Dallas this week". This has been a long week for everyone.

We started with great intentions. Fly to Dallas, rent a car and drive to the lake. How hard can that be?

Plan a regatta for only 21 boats. How hard can that be?

Run 11 races in four days. How hard can that be?

On Tuesday morning all of our lives changed forever. That's hard. We were trapped between our need to mourn our fallen Americans and our desire to fight terrorism by going on with our lives.

We all worked together to ensure the safety of everyone. War rooms were set up to monitor the location and travel options for competitors and judges. The highway system provided the best alternative to travel. Rental cars with license plates from all over the country now reside in Dallas. Drivers were sent to retrieve some that could not secure travel. All of the original Adams and Mallory teams are safe.

We made emotional and tactical decisions to determine which way to go next, but we were all confused. Many competitors had no choice, some did.

The decision to continue with an event was a hard one. Those who stayed vowed to go on as sailors. We began to hear phrases such as "game on". Some of us felt bad when we couldn't remember the words to God Bless America ( which by the way, it's "through the night with the light from above"). By sharing our pain with our fellow sailors we began the healing process.

But Mother Nature was confused by it all and turned off the wind. The man at the weather bureau quit drawing lines on the map. The PRO chased wind around the lake and we sailed in wind that didn't appear on the water. We were all confused, but we made the best of what we had. Not to worry, it was a long regatta.

Another day came and the wind did not. Our eyes once again turned to the television and America mourned. Mother Nature ended the days mourning by providing wind. Although it was a tricky easterly breeze, we were not as confused. The jib sheet trimmer told you, "don't worry, it's still a long regatta".

The southerly breeze returned and sailboat racing on lake Ray Hubbard returned to the norm. We all became more sure of our decisions. But nature once again ended the day by turning off the wind and reminding us it is time to return to our families. Sailing has been part of the healing process, …

The question of "where were you when?" will be asked of all of us for many years to come. I was with a group of sailors from all parts of America who showed they are ready for whatever comes next. You have conducted yourselves as good Corinthians, fierce competitors and champions of the sailing community. Speaking for both Chandlers Landing and Rush Creek Yacht Clubs, we are proud to have you as our friends and guests.

Also, it's great to see all the new Flying Scot skippers out sailing in the Sunday and Wednesday evening races. Old-timers, if you can not find crew or just feel good-hearted, please offer to race with these guys or lend a helping hand with some sailing insight.

Speaking of new... Four brand spanking new Flying Scot will be delivered to the lake on the weekend of the Open House regatta.

SMU has its Annual Fall Regatta "Frozen Hate" scheduled for Oct. 6th. SMU is notoriously short on members; so, any help that could be offered by CSC members for race committee would be appreciated. Contact Heidi Prather

I am trying to advertise the Sunday races to new members of SMU Sailing Club and Sailing Team. If anyone is ever looking for a crew and would like to lend a helping hand to teaching new SMU members how to sail, please email me with the contact information so I can give it to our members. Sunday races are a great learning experience and a lot of fun. I hope SMU can start becoming more involved in them! Heidi Prather (hprather@mail.smu.edu)

What is the Portsmouth Yardstick Anyway?
The US SAILING Portsmouth Yardstick is a widely used method for rating boats of different classes that are sailing the same course. It is derived from actual records of classes-of-boats racing.

The Primary Yardstick is the Thistle. This class was selected in 1961 because of its class organization, wide geographic distribution of active fleets, and activity at clubs conducting races for other classes. The rating of 83.0 was the Portsmouth Number that the Dixie Inland Yacht Racing Association (DIYRA) yardstick was using in 1961. Nationwide participation, using this common reference, led to NAYRU (predecessor to US SAILING) assuming responsibility for DIYRA Portsmouth Yardstick in 1973. It is now known as the US SAILING Portsmouth Yardstick. The Portsmouth Numbers are reviewed annually based on race results submitted by clubs and fleets around the country each year.

Portsmouth Numbers provide a direct comparison of the performance of different classes. It is assumed that all one-design boats conform to class rules. The numbers are defined as the length of time boats would take to sail a common course, but unspecified distance. For example, the distance a boat rated at 80 could cover in 80 minutes should be the same as a boat rated at 95 could cover in 95 minutes in the same race.

The Portsmouth Yardstick is used to calculate a corrected time (CT) from elapsed time (ET) for Portsmouth Numbers (PN) based upon the equation:

CT = (ET / PN) x 100:

The average PNs are provided below for the some of the boats sailed on White Rock Lake. PNs are also available for different wind speed ranges. Based on the yardstick, the Lightning is the fastest boat on White Rock Lake with a PN = 87.7. The third column provides the elapsed sailing times that each boat would need to finish in to have the same CT as a Lightning sailing a 60 minute race (corrected time of 68.4min). This provides an idea of how much time one boat must give to another boat. For example - to beat a Flying Scot and a Rebel in a 60 min race, a Lightning would have to be more than 1.84 min and 6.29 min ahead of each, respectively.
