Electronic Newsletter - Request for Feedback

Over half of the membership received their CSC newsletter via email last month. The email newsletter was well received, but some people had problems with the way their email formatted the information. The fancy banner caused some problems, so I deleted it until I better understand how to be universally compatible.  I need your feedback if you are having problems with legibility, fonts, format, etc. so that viewing problems can be addressed. I would also appreciate any suggestions that you might have on how to improve the newsletter. Send feedback to me at frankr@firstworld.net.

CSC Member Survey

If you have not yet returned your membership survey, please take a few minutes and fill it out. The Corinthian Sailing Club has a diverse membership with many interests. We would like to develop programs and activities for all the sailors in our club. The questions focused on the broad areas of increasing participation in club activities, improving communications, growing the club membership, and tapping the membership talent pool. We want to hear from you. You can help shape the clubs activities and future growth.

CSC Board Meeting

The next CSC board meeting will be at the dock on Tuesday, April 3, 2001. The meeting is open to all members.

Spruce-Up Day – April 7

Spruce-Up Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 7. Projects will include updating walkways throughout the club, repairing plumbing, cleaning-up along shoreline in front of the club, and commencing the repair of the boat pads. Davit owners are also encouraged to repair their davits, including replacing of missing 2x6's in the walkway between davits. So, come one, come all and bring your hammers, nail pullers and screw guns and join the party. We'll break for lunch, which will be provided by the club.

Splash Day – April 8

Splash Day is the beginning of the 2001 race season. Races will start at 1:30. April is a great time to sail in Dallas and Splash Day is wonderful opportunity to see your friends after a long winter. We'd like to see as many people out on Sunday as possible. The C-15's will provide hamburgers and soft drinks following the races for a nominal charge.

At the Dock

Work has begun on rebuilding the south most sail folding area, relocating the walkway for davits #169 – 175 from the north to the south side of the davits, and reconstructing the main north-south walkway from gate to gate.

The new motor is on order to replace the 2-stoke Whaler engine.

Clancy McKenna, Davit Registrar, completed a davit survey. Things are not good. 17% of the davits were unusable or not being used. The board will be addressing this issue. Also, the lease records for the board boat pads are out of date. Please let Clancy know if you know who owns any of the board boats.

From the Fleets

Corinthian Fleet 1 elected David Barrett as their new fleet captain.

Flying Scott sailor, Scott Mauney, was elected FSSA district governor.

Snipe Fleet 001, and some of its members, have several boats that they are willing to lease on a lease-purchase arrangement in order to encourage newcomers to try out the Snipe. Sale prices range from $500 to $4,000 and monthly leases are $50-$150. Details are available at www.dalsail.com.

The Butterfly fleet is racing 3 races every Saturday. The fleet is refurbishing some "older" Butterflys to be used for beginners and guests. This is a "work in process", but we plan to have 5 boats in the near future, with a long-term goal of ten boats. We can usually put you in a boat. Come on down, or contact Tom Charland at 214-368-5797or charland@augustmail.com.

New Starting Sequence

The new racing rules will be in effect when you read this. Greta Mittman will hold a short review of the new starting sequence on the dock at 1PM prior to this Sunday’s races for the benefit of the racers and race committee. Don’t forget that we go on daylight savings time this Sunday. Gretta will address the change to Rule 26 - Starting Races which impacts all Sunday racers at White Rock Lake. The 10-minute Warning – Preparatory sequence is being replaced with a 5-minute sequence for all starts. The new sequence is:

Warning signal at 5 minutes before start with class flag and 1 sound.

Preparatory signal at 4 minutes before the start with a P-flag, or blue shape, and 1 sound.

At 1 minute before the start, the P-flag, or blue shape, is removed with 1 long sound.

At the start, the class flag is removed with 1 sound and the next class flag is put up at the same time as the warning signal for the next race. The sequence continues until all races are started.

This sequence is rolled from one start to the next without a break. A General Recall, Postponement or Abandonment can interrupt the rolling sequence. Each is executed per the applicable rule. For more specifics, see the attached new Sunday Joint Lake Sailing Instructions and attend Greta’s talk.

Calling All CSC Junior Sailors

The Corinthian Sailing Club is host to the Texas Sailing Association Juniors Racing Circuit on May 5th and 6th on White Rock Lake. This event is open to sailors age 8 to 17. Races are conducted for neophytes through experts with sailors competing by age, experience and boat class. Boat classes expected are Optimist Prams, Lasers, Laser Radials and Bytes. All of you CSC Juniors should start practicing now for this fun time. Registration forms are now available and we would appreciate your early entry, which will help with food, T-shirts and medal planning.

We expect sailors and families from Houston, Austin, Fort Worth and Dallas area clubs. Should you be willing to house a family from out of town for Friday and Saturday nights, please contact Bob Manning at 214-348-7731 or send an e-mail bmann3335@aol.com.

Bob Gough is the PRO for this regatta and could use some volunteers (especially parents of participants) to help make this a great experience for all concerned.

Junior Sailing Camps

The Corinthian Sailing Club is sponsoring two sailing camps this year. Dates are set for camps on June 4th through June 15th and July 9th through July 19th. The camps are available to wannabe or experienced sailors who can swim and are 8 to 16 years of age with parents or a guardian that are a club member of CSC. U.S. Sailing Certified Instructor, Tom Forgue, will once again be in charge of training. Please use the registration form included in this Main Sheet to enroll your sailors. Contact Bob Manning (see Junior regatta article above) for more information.

Space is limited by the number of Optimists, Sunfish and Lasers owned by the club. You can help increase the number of boats available by making a tax-deductible contribution to the Carol Gough Sailing Education Foundation. See information below.

Adult Sailing Lessons

Sailing lessons are available for regular and associate members at CSC. Classes are on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6PM to 9PM for six sessions. Five of the six sessions will be on the water. Most training will be in Flying Scots, but other fleets are urged to participate. Points to be covered include seamanship, leaving the pier, points of sail, tacking, jibing, returning to pier, man overboard, and basic knots. The first 2001 class will begin on Monday April 30 at CSC clubhouse. Class 2 will begin on June 4. Call Bob Harrington at 972-276-1954 for more information or to register for class.

Women's Racing Program

Planning is in full swing for the third year of the Women’s Racing Program (WRP) at the CSC. The WRP is designed for women with a strong desire to advance their racing skills. It’s a great opportunity to enhance your knowledge of the rules of racing, as well as strengthen your tactics and strategies that will propel you across the finish line. Program requirements include knowing the points of sail, basic docking, boat rigging and terminology and a minimum of 6 months racing experience within the past year.

This year’s WRP schedule consists of five Saturday sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Session dates are June 9, June 17, July 14, July 21 and July 28. Each session includes coaching by members of area sailing clubs, drills on the water and lots of socializing with other women in the program.

Occasionally, women from the WRP are invited to sail with members from other local sailing clubs to further develop their expertise in racing different kinds of boats on a variety of racecourses. We invite women from other sailing clubs to come join us and build relationships with women who have a mutual interest in racing.

The WRP will build your confidence and skill level so that you can compete against some of the local area talent. The WRP encourages the participation of its members in area regattas. Familiarize yourself with the race calendar so that you can start planning your schedule. If you are interested in participating in the Women’s Racing Program, please complete and mail the attached Registration Form before May 1, 2001 (please note that you must be a current member of a sailing club and meet all program experience requirements). For additional information, contact Kai Kunnapas at 214-324-4593 or kaik@flash.net

Special Olympics Regatta

CSC, in conjunction with the Special Olympics of Texas, is hosting a 2001 Special Olympics Regatta. The regatta will be sailed in Flying Scots on White Rock Lake on Saturday, June 23, 2001. A team will consist of a Special Olympian Athlete and a Unified Partner provided by the club. Three races will be sailed and lunch will be served at the clubhouse. We need volunteers to help with the regatta and to serve as Unified Partners. Contact Joni Seifrick at 214-553-0005 for information or to donate your time or money. The registration form is attached and must be received by June 9.

Carol Gough Sailing Education Foundation

The Carol Gough Sailing Education Foundation is dedicated to making sailing and sailboat racing accessible by providing funds for equipment and education activities. The foundation has 501( c )( 3 ) status, thus donations are tax deductible. Contributions may be in the form of cash, boats or equities.
