Fellow Corinthian Sailors -

Well, my term of service as Commodore has come to an end and it was a great year.  Looking back over the year brings some highlights to mind:  First, it was a real pleasure working with the 2001 CSC board who are a fine group of people, dedicated to their posts and to the betterment of the club.  I feel like we accomplished some very good things.  I enjoyed seeing all the individual club members working behind the scenes to make the club successful, safe and a pleasant place to be.  I am proud of our sailors who have represented us so well at regional and national events.  The success of our sail training programs both for adults and juniors has been great to see.  The high level of participation in the race programs and the number of day sailors on the lake is especially satisfying. 

This year I also had the opportunity to work with leadership from other clubs and at off-lake events, which has given me perspective on how special our club really is.  While other clubs are really struggling to stay afloat, our program is thriving and no one equals the quality of race management we enjoy weekly.  My completely unbiased opinion is that the CSC is one of the best sailing clubs in the country.

Right now Teresa & I are really looking forward to concentrating on our sailing and trying to keep up with you guys on the race course.  Thanks for the opportunity to serve and thanks to all the individuals who helped me so much this year.

CSC Annual Business Meeting
The club's annual meeting is scheduled for January 19^th at the Royal Oaks County Club at 7915 Greenville , just north of Meadow.  Hor d'oeuvres and cocktails will be served at 7PM followed by the business meeting at 8PM .  The meeting agenda will include year end reports from the current board, election of a new board, presentation of the Norm Watkins award and setting the 2002 dues.

Past Commodores form a nominating committee's each year to propose a slate of officers for the next year.  The 2002 board will be voted on at the annual meeting and proposed slate is as follows.

Notice - Four Davits to be Auctioned
A davit auction will be held to sell unsold davits of ex-members.  The auction will be held by sealed bid and the proceeds will go to the current owner.  The bids will be opened at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 2, 2002 in the CSC clubhouse.  Bids may be presented in person at the auction or mailed to the Davit Registrar.  Send mail-in bids to Clancy McKenna, Corinthian Sailing Club, PO Box 180087 , Dallas , TX 75218 .  Mail-in bids must be received by Friday, March 1, 2002 .  Available davits are 61, 107, 187 and 196.  Davits will be withdrawn from the auction, if sold by the present owner prior to opening the bids.  Be sure to include your name, the davit number, and amount in your bid.  A map of the davits is available in the CSC clubhouse and on the CSC website.

Davit Use
One of the biggest issues facing the club is the availability of davits.  We have members, who are sailing regularly, that cannot find a davit, as well as, potential new members who are reluctant to join the club without a place to keep their boat.  At the same time, we have davits owned by inactive members.  The CSC Board of Directors, as well as the membership, has been concerned about the number of davits and boats that are in disrepair.  There are also davits that remain empty or contain boats that have not been used in a long time. 

The CSC By-Laws provide that the boat and davit must be maintained in a safe and usable condition.  The By-Laws further prohibit a davit remaining empty or being used solely to store a boat that is not sailed.  Although often an unpleasant task, the board has a duty to the club to exercise proper stewardship of our facilities and will be contacting members owning boats or davits that are not compliant with the bylaws.  The board intends to enforce the By-Laws for the overall good of the club 

If you are contacted, please understand that this is not personal, but necessary for the safety and betterment of the club.  Our first desire is for all members to make use of the club.  If you own a boat or a davit that you are not planning, nor plan, to use in the near future, please consider leasing or selling it so that others may enjoy the club.  If you feel that you have extenuating circumstances that the board should be aware of please contact the Davit Registrar.

From the Fleets
Butterfly Fleet - Butterfliers had their annual meeting and Christmas party in December.  New Fleet officers were elected.  Bruce Faust was named Fleet Captain, Bob Biegler Secretary-Treasurer, Sandy Dennison Race Chairman and Tom Charland Liaison Officer.  Lisle Eddy was named Butterfly'er of the Year for having the best overall record in the four quarterly race series.  Scoring was close as were many of the hotly contested races, but Lisle prevailed once again.   We also happily recognized again that Scot Mauney was the winner of the National Single-handed Butterfly Regatta earlier this year.  Congratulations to both!

We plan to continue our Saturday racing program as in the past with starting time at 12 noon for the months of January and February.  After that we will return to our 10:30 AM start.  We have 3 races each Saturday.  Some loaner boats are available and guests are invited.  Come give it a try!

For the Love of the Lake
"For the Love of the Lake " (FTLOTL) is an organization which helps maintain the park around the lake so all may enjoy it.  On the second Saturday of each month, they sponsor a trash pick up.  Volunteers meet in office between 8 & 9 am , sign in, pick up gloves and trash bags, and set out to their assigned area of the lake.  For the Love of the Lake offices are located in Casa Linda Plaza , at the intersection of Garland Road and Buckner Boulevard .  We are located directly under the Eckerd's, facing Buckner Boulevard and Doctor's Hospital.

As an organization, CSC has adopted the area in front of the club, including parking lots.  Participation of members of the CSC has been low and we would like to see more people help keep our area of the lake shore clean.  It only takes a couple of hours once a month.

The Adopt a Shore Line program was created by the Dallas Park and Recreation Department in 1990.  Originally, they had 9 groups, each adopting one mile of shoreline and picked up trash twice a year.  In 1996, a newly formed volunteer group, For the Love of the Lake , approached the Park department about increasing participation and frequency of volunteer trash pick.  Now there are 39 groups adopting 1/3 mile sections of the shoreline with monthly clean up days. The section that CSC has adopted is directly in front of the club.  Last April, The Corinthian Sailing Club was presented a Certificate of Congressional Recognition by Congressman Pete Sessions for its' work in helping keep the lake shore clean.  Every summer, CSC recognizes the good work done by FTLOTL by sponsoring a party in the club house with food and sailing.

For the Love of the Lake also raises money to purchase:

-trash & recycling receptacles
-freeze proof handicap accessible water fountains
-playground equipment
-benches, bike racks, tables & chairs

Make a New Years resolution to come and join us at our January volunteer meeting on Monday, January 21.  A presentation titled "A Panorama of the Dallas Arboretum" will be presented by a member of the Arboretum Speakers Bureau.  Please come and join us for an informative program and an excellent, no pressure opportunity to meet others who love our lake as well as to explore possible areas of personal volunteer interest. The meeting is open to anyone and will take place at the offices in Casa Linda.  A social time will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.

What’s New on the CSC Website
A map of the club with davit locations has been added to the Club - General Information page.  Davit construction details will be added in the near future.  CSC's website is reaching maturity.  New material will continue to be added, but we will be more in a maintenance mode in the future.  Examples of revised postings include an updated the membership roster, details on the CSC annual business meeting, new photo's to the photo album, updated contacts list and keeping the newsletter file up to date.

Forums provide a vehicle for members to communicate with one another and are now receiving weekly posting.  The Wanted / For Sale Forum is getting heavy use, as people try to buy and sell boats, davits and equipment.  There are several davits posted for sale.  There are a number of experienced crew looking for jobs.

The Main Sheet - Your Newsletter
