December 2001  Corinthian Sailing Club  White Rock Lake  Dallas, TX

From the Commodore
Fellow Corinthian Sailors -

Well, 2001 is winding down.  It is time to focus on the holiday season and start thinking about next year.  In some smoke filled room amongst the clinking of liquor bottles and swearing, past commodores are meeting to hammer out a proposed slate of club officers for next year.  After serving on the board for the last few years, my view of the role of these club officers has changed somewhat.  It has become clear, the board doesn't make the club run, the members do.

Board members are needed so there are central points for coordination of effort and exchange of information in specific areas, but the Pier Rear can't nail down every stray plank and the VC Race can't run every race.  What makes an all-volunteer club like ours work is the steady contributions of the rank and file membership.  It is Alan cleaning up the clubhouse, Mo installing a light, Dave planting flowers, Lauri making a salad, Bart scaring off an intruder,  Lisle giving a sailing lesson, John coaching some
juniors, Kevin doing race duty, Glen inspecting a davit, Prater reviewing a letter, and Ed showing up every week to race, Chris taking a picture.  These people all know it isn't writing a check that makes you part of the club, it is the contribution of time and effort that makes the club yours.

In your planning for 2002, include some time for your club.  Your club, and you, will be the better for it.

See you on the docks - Phil

Upcoming Events - Mark Your Calenders
New Years Day Good Luck Sail - Jan 1, 2002
CSC Annual Business Meeting - Jan 19, 2002

CSC Annual Business Meeting
The club's annual meeting is scheduled for January 19th at the Royal Oaks County Club on Greenville north of Meadow.  More info will be available on the website and in the January newsletter.

Around the Club
WRBC has developed a very efficient system for removal and replacement of pilings.  They have offered to demo the system for us.  Clancy McKenna will coordinate this exchange of information.

Several of the Junior's Sunfish have been sold, but two are still available.  Contact Bob Manning if you are interested.

Mercury has replaced our newest 40HP motor which was on Rescue 2.  There is a potential rocker arm problem that could cause problems later.

Corinthian Sailing Club's Annual Awards Banquet

The Corinthian Sailing Club's Annual Awards Banquet was held on November 10th at the City Club atop the Bank of America Plaza.  There was a great dinner, drinks, awards presentation and entertainment by the Dave Anderson band.  Everyone was all dressed up and looked great, albeit hard to recognize at times.  It was a great party.  Bob Gough was the master of ceremonies for the awards presentation and threw in a few club Oscars along the way:

·         Best Performance in Two Boats - Chris Dukeminier - sailed Sandy Dennison and his boat single handed in the same race

·         Best Performance on the Outside of a Boat - Mike Mittman polished the bottom of his Scot to such a point that boat would not stay in his new davit.

·         Best Non-performance in a Boat - Scott Mauney had the most DNFs and received a frozen turkey for this somewhat dubious Oscar.

·         Best Motivational Performance by a Crew - Kathy Menyard pushed Bob to a third in the Open House

·         Best Performance off the Dock  - Rachell Mittman stared as the youngest club member to jump off the dock twice this year

Tommy Miller won a Turkey Fryer in the raffle and Scott Mauney promptly gave him the turkey that he had won earlier in the evening.

On a more serious vane, the club awarded the following:

The Maurice Martin Trophy for the CSC Club Championship was presented to Marke Smith by prior winner Richard Wade.  This is a beautiful trophy.

The Bill Leonard Award went to Judy and JC Adrian as husband and wife sailing together and showing all that sailing can be enjoyed as a family sport.

The Carol Gough Trophy presented to Frank Richards by prior winner Kai Kunnapas for promoting women's racing.

The Old Salt Award was awarded to Willis McQueen by prior recipients Max Hibbs and Ed Lockey

Fleet awards were presented as follow.

What’s New on the CSC Website
Forums provide a vehicle for members to communicate with one another and are now receiving weekly posting.  The Wanted / For Sale Forum is getting heavy use, as people try to buy and sell boats, davits and equipment.  There are several davits posted for sale.  There are a number of experienced crew looking for jobs, so there is no excuse for not having a crew.  The Fall/Winter Flying Scot committee duty roster is now posted.

A topographical map of the lake and surrounding area has been added to the Club Info page.  Scores for the Snipe Fleet 1 series, Club and Lake Championships , Flying Scot Open House Regatta and Wurstfest Regatta have been posted under Racing - Race Results.  The Home Page, Events, Newsletter and Race Notice pages have been cleaned up as 2001 winds down.

The Club Roster will be updated in December to include new members.  This roster can be printed from the web if you would like a hard copy.  A map of the club with davit locations has been prepared and will be posted in December and davit construction details are being prepared.

From the Fleets

Butterfly - Beginning December 1st, the Butterfly and Laser Saturday racing program will use their winter schedule.  From December through February, all races will begin at 12:00 noon .

Lasers - The 2001 regatta season has come to an end for Lasers in Texas , but we will be very active sailing this fall/winter on White Rock Lake .  Doug Peckover, Brig North and Ed Henkel are a few of the experienced master sailors that will use this time to tune up, as the Nationals are in Austin and the Worlds are in the US next year.  Everyone is welcome to join us for some great Laser sailing each Saturday.  See the winter schedule above.
