SEASONS
GREETINGS
This
is the final newsletter of 2002. It
has been a most successful year for the Corinthian Sailing Club under the
direction of Commodore Bob Gough. Membership
is up. Davit utilization is greatly
improved. The website draws
extremely favorable comment from members and nonmembers alike.
Participation in local racing has increased, and Club members have had
great success in regattas around the United States (and even in England!)
The equipment is in the best shape in years, and the dock facilities have
been greatly improved. Congratulations
to those on the board who have led these achievements, and gratitude to all the
Club members who have achieved these efforts through their hard work.
The
work will go on in 2003, and surely the results will be as fulfilling.
The CSC Board wishes prosperity and fair sailing in the New Year to all
Club members and to those close to them.
SOCIAL
EVENTS
Annual
Awards Banquet
Prater
and Nancy Monning continued the great traditions of The Club Awards Banquet on
November 9th at The City Club. Attendance
was great and a good time was had by all of the ninety or so guests who were
wined and dined. The Silent Auction
raised well over $2000 for the Club. Auctioned
items included two davits, a sailboat cover from Sailboatcovers.com, a cocktail
cruise with Mac McCoy, the opportunity to crew or skipper with Richard Wade,
race course coaching by Bob Harrington and Kelly Gough, and a Hog Hunt with
Prater Monning. Everyone danced to
the Dave Anderson Band - some got pretty crazy!
Chris Dukeminier Race Vice Commodore presented the Carol Gough Award and
the Bill Leonard Trophy.
The
Carol Gough Award commemorates Carol’s contribution to the Corinthian Sailing
Club, and is awarded every year to the person who best promotes women’s racing
at CSC while exhibiting true Corinthian spirit. This year the award was
presented to Natalie Mauney, in part for her outstanding racing successes. She
crewed on the winning team for the Lake Championship, the Flying Scot North
American Championship, and the Championship of Champions (see story below) this
year. This is the second time that she crewed on the winning Championship of
Champions team.
The
Bill Leonard Trophy was presented to Judy and J. C. Adrian in 2002. Because she
appreciated all the problems of married people sailing together, Susan Leonard
created this trophy in Bill's memory to recognize a husband and wife each year
who both show the spirit of competitive sailboat racing at the Corinthian
Sailing Club. The trophy is meant to encourage married couples to sail together.
This was a well-deserved repeat for the Adrian's; they also won the Trophy in
2001.
Special
Announcement – Tax Planning
The
Carol Gough Sailing Education Foundation is dedicated to making sailing and
sailboat racing accessible by providing funds for equipment, education
activities and on a limited basis individual education grants.
The foundation has 501( c )( 3 ) status, and financial donations are tax
deductible. A board of directors,
autonomous from CSC, administers the foundation.
The fund has enabled many worthwhile activities at CSC over the years and
can always benefit from additional contributions.
Please consider donating to this fund to enhance your year-end income tax
position. For more information,

Michael
Mittman,
or Prater
Monning.

Bill
Draheim Wins Championship of Champions
28
October 2002 (Lake Norman, NC)—Bill Draheim of Rockwell, TX, along with crew
Scott and Natalie Mauney took top honors at US SAILING’s U.S. Championship of
Champions at Lake Norman Yacht Club (Charlotte, NC), beating out 16 other
national sailing champions. Rolex Watch USA sponsored the event; Rolex sponsors
all US SAILING Adult Championships.
Draheim,
the national champion in the Flying Scot class, finished with 29 points in the
13-race series that ended Saturday, October 26.
Mike
Ingham of Rochester, NY, representing the Thistle class, finished in second
place with 44 points, and Dick Tillman of Syracuse, Ind., the national
windsurfing champion, finished third with 51 points.
The
only female competitor, Allison Jolly of St. Petersburg, FL., finished in fourth
place with 59 points. Jolly is the national champion in the Fireball class.
The
races were sailed in Flying Scot sailboats provided by Lake Norman Yacht Club.
Two races were completed in light air on Wednesday before the wind died
completely. Thursday dawned cloudy, with light winds, and the sailors were able
to complete five more races. An additional five races were sailed in Friday's
rainy, blustery conditions, and the final race was completed Saturday morning,
after which the winds went calm.
The
annual event is held at different locations around the country. Lake Norman
Yacht Club hosted the event once before, in 1985. In 1993 US SAILING named the
Championship of Champions trophy in honor of Jack Brown, a former Lake Norman
Yacht Club member who was active in national sailing circles as a judge, regatta
organizer and member of US SAILING Committees until his death in 1993.
Bill
Draheim Again
