Labor Day Party Cancelled

Due to rainy weather we cancelled this event.  Not to worry, we have added another event to make up for it - See below!

 

Past Commodores Dinner - Saturday, September 27, 2003 - Festivities begin at 6:00 p.m.

Please join us in honoring the contributions of Past Commodores.  Preparations are complete with a delicious, seated dinner provided by Chef Jerry and entertainment by The Pat Glynn Quartet!  All we need now are the people who make this club so great!  Please RSVP by no later than September 23, 2003 .  We are looking forward to a wonderful evening! 

 

Boats, Bratwurst and Beer! - Saturday, October 11, 2003 (After the State Fair Regatta!  Or around 6:00 p.m. ).  We have added this event because Fall in Dallas , and especially at White Rock Lake is so wonderful!  This casual event will include a Beer Tasting (pay $5.00/person or bring a six-pack of your favorite beer to share!), a grungiest "life vest" contest (Note: the TALL TALE accompanying your grungy life vest adds points!) and a Fall Desert Contest!  The Club will provide the German style food!  Bring your family and friends this will be great fun!

 

Annual Awards Banquet - Saturday, November 8, 2003 at The City Club in downtown Dallas .  This is one of the most exciting events of the year!  The evening includes a fabulous seated dinner, awards program, dancing and an auction!  The auction proceeds will support the Carol Gough Sailing Education Foundation.  This Foundation provides funding support for sailing education and is one of the most unique attributes of the Corinthian Sailing Club.  Your support is critical to the success of the auction and to the future of sailing education at the CSC.  We are fortunate to have Kai Kunnapas as the 2003 Auction Committee Chair.  She will be seeking your talents and unique resources to make this a successful auction for the Corinthian Sailing Club!  Each Fleet (and the CSC Board) will be asked to contribute auction items, but the most exciting auction items will come from the diverse talents of our members!  Please call Kai at 214-324-4593 to let her know how you can contribute to this important effort!

Junior Program

 

Mark your calendars and periodically check the CSC website for exciting news on upcoming junior events and activities.

 

October 12 - Junior Open House and Halloween Party.  Plans are being finalized for a Junior Open House and Party on Sunday October 12^th.  The fun will begin about 2:00 pm with activities through the early evening.  Invite your friends who have an interest in sailing to find out what all the fun is about. There will be open sailing for CSC juniors and boat rides for your invited guests. There will be a Floating Pumpkin Round-Up, a Witch of the Lake Scavenger Hunt and other fun activities.  Mark your calendar now and check your email and the CSC website for further details as we firm them up.   

 

Sunday Open Sailing. With assistance of parents we hope to begin Sunday afternoon open sailing with informal racing. Anyone interested in helping with rescue boat duty please contact the Sailing Education Commodore at ed@cscsailing.org.

 

Parents' Meeting. Also in the plans is to reschedule the "rained-out" Parents' Meeting originally scheduled for August 31^st.  At the meeting we will discuss what activities you would like to organize for CSC juniors and demonstrate for parents how to properly rig an Opti.  Parents will also have an opportunity to be checked out on the operation of the 15' Whaler.

 

Junior Spruce-Up Day.  Also in the works is a "Junior Spruce-Up Day" the goal for which will be to get the junior rigs and shed in shape and organized.

 

Junior Regattas. CSC continues to be well represented on the TSA Junior Circuit.  Brittany Widzer and Will Peirce attended the Cannonball Run Regatta in Palacios on August 23-24.  Two weeks later on September 6-7, CSC was represented by six of its junior racers at the Fort Worth Boat Club's Ol' Man of the Sea Regatta, with Brittany and Paul Denison competing in Laser Radials and Will, Masie Comen, Cameron Keehn and Caroline Keehn competing in Optis. Paul Denison then ventured down to Corpus Christie on September 20-21 finishing 4^th against a tough field of Laser Radails in the rolling swells and whitecaps of Corpus Christi Bay . Upcoming junior regattas are at Seabrook Sailing Club on October 4^th and the season ending regatta with annual award banquet at Texas Corinthian Yacht Club on October 25^th.

What a great year for "the Women of CSC" (sounds like a calendar ...)

  

Road to Rolex

This is the first time in the history of the Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship that CSC will be represented!!!! Yeah CSC !  67 teams from 7 countries and 17 states have registered making it the largest in the event's history (http://www.race.annapolisyc.com/rolexkeelboats/).  Team 4 Texas will be racing against 5 time Rolex champion Betsy Alison as well as former Adams Cup champions, all Americans, Olympic medalists and hopefuls.

 

Our fundraising dinner, held on August 23 at the Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club, was an incredible success.  We had over 90 RSVP's for this fabulous evening of home cooked Greek food. It was a great mix of folks from all four of our sailing clubs (DCYC, FWBC, RCYC and CSC). The evening started off with appetizers of pita bread to dip into hummus and tzatziki or smother with feta cheese.  As twilight descended, we were treated to a the main course smorgasbord of Greek salad, tabouli, pastitsio (Greek lasagna), green beans with lamb, spanikopita, dolmas, and home made Greek bread.  After everyone was nice and full and munching on home made Greek cookies, our auction started with the help of Mr. Bob Sinclair from DCYC.  We want to thank everyone who attended, donated and supported us in making this a fabulous success.

 

Our next step is packing the boat up and driving it to Annapolis . We will race in the East Coast Championships the weekend of Sept. 19-21 as a warm up for Rolex.

Team 4 Texas ' plan to get the boat up to Annapolis and race in the East Coast Championships this weekend may be 'thwarted ' by Hurricane Isabel's attempt to crash the party! Racing for Friday has been canceled, and they are waiting to see where Isabel heads before canceling the regatta or changing it to "ISHI" (I Survived Hurricane Isabel).

The winds were light: 1.5 - 5 mph in the morning with some short lived 8-10 mph winds showing up in the late afternoon (race 3 to be exact).  The wind direction: well for before the first race it was anywhere from 45 - 175 degrees. At different times during the day we sailed in Easterlies, Westerly and NE breeze.  The lead in Race One changed with every leg of the W (2.5) race. Any pre-start wind info was valid for the first two legs, then it all changed.  Post race one, even the female judge shook her head in sympathy.  The breeze went from light to non-existence so we took our lunch break and didn't return to the water till late afternoon (approx. 2:30-3:00 PM ).

 

Another race was attempted. The race committee set up a course for the SE breeze that existed at the start.  The wind died right at the start, then shifted W, then N, and then W. The race was abandoned and we all headed down to the other end of the lake.  

 

In race 4 we had the pleasure of being lifted at least 70 degrees in a puff going up wind, and beating to the leeward mark in light winds.

 

Overall the competition was "close", with the competitor's all finishing within a third of a leg of each other.

 

At the awards ceremony, Kai, Renee and Debbie presented Greta's team CSC/ Area F Adams Cup caps to wear proudly at the National event in October at Lake Norman .
