CSC JUNIOR’S FLOAT - LAKEWOOD PARADE, JULY 3rd

Several members convened to decorate a CSC Optimist for the annual Independence Day Parade in Lakewood. Thanks to Ken Brown, for delivering the trailered sailboat and mini 4 Wheeler. Adrienne Montgomery and Kelsea and Katherine helped decorate, along with Ian Van Buren. The morning was cloudy but dry as Bob Van Buren drove the mini 4 Wheeler, towing Ian on back, as Miles, Kelsea and Katherine threw candy to the spectators. Several folks approached us along the way and at the end of the parade inquiring about the club. We think we made a good showing for the club, and believe this is worth making an annual tradition!

4TH OF JULY

The wind was fine all day long for our Independence Day celebration. The fun began with fun races for watermelons. The winner for retrieving the watermelon with the star cut-out, Beth Miller, took home a $25 gift certificate to West Marine. Others successful in snapping up a watermelon got to keep and eat the tasty seedless fruits.

After an appetizer buffet and drinks to quench hunger pangs & stave off thirst, everyone dove into a hearty line up of Red, Hot & Blue’s Bar-B-Que. The winner for best dessert, Mrs. David Bailey, for her deliciously vanishing apricot cobbler, won a $25 gift certificate to Central Market. Thanks to all who participated in the boat lighting contest. David Barrett gave Ken Brown some daunting competition, but the judges favored Ken’s smoking hot flagship decor to take the prize. As winner of the best -lit boat contest, Ken won a $50 gift certificate to West Marine. Throughout the evening, the Woodrow Wilson High School Jazz Band set up on the balcony and serenaded the crowd with many famous and beloved tunes, which added to the beauty and drama of the fireworks shows over the water, as well as the overall festivity of this great day!

SAILING FOR RHINOS A GREAT SUCCESS

Our second annual Sailing for Rhinos was held on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, and was a great success again this year. Approximately 150 people and over 25 boats participated in the fun races (with no sailing mishaps this year!). The event featured fun races, great food and libations and wonderful and interesting people. In addition, the wind gods were favorable and the temperatures tolerable.

The event raised just under $3000 through donations, T-shirts and a silent auction. One interesting silent auction item was “Mayor for the Day” which went to John and Pat Diggin’s

grandson, Myles Busch. Myles will help the Honorable Mayor Laura Miller conduct a Dallas City Council meeting (good luck Myles!) All of the T-Shirts were sold and I would not be surprised to learn that many CSC members donated more than the $5.00 minimum to participate in the event.

A special thank you to Tommy and Melissa Miller and others who helped run the fun races and to all of the skippers who volunteered to host Zoo Keepers on their boats. Special thanks to Diane Van Buren and the band, Recent Civilization, for providing music during the event. A very special thank you to the CSC Board and members for supporting this important community effort! In exchange for the generous contributions of the Corinthian Sailing Club, the Dallas Zoo is providing CSC members half-price admission tickets to the Dallas Zoo. If you did not get a post card with this coupon, please contact De McCombs at 214-670-6862 for assistance.

Although the event is designed to provide direct support for rhino conservation in Africa, this year’s proceeds will be used to support a national zoo keeper conference being hosted by Dallas Zoo Keepers in September. This is a one-time deviation from the purpose of the event, and future Sailing for Rhinos events will support rhino conservation.

JUNIOR PROGRAM

SUMMER JUNIOR SAIL CLASSES: Many thanks to our coaches, Megan Chrowstowski and Evan Daugherty, who ran the classes smoothly and efficiently, despite the days of no wind, too much wind, storms, rain for days on end, floods, and fallen trees across the road to CSC. But, more importantly their enthusiasm, love of sailing and ability to work with children, made this a memorable summer for us all. Through their efforts, many young sailors have been introduced to the joys of sailing and hopefully have had a seed planted in them that will grow and blossom into a lifetime love of the sport.

Our summer sailing classes consisted of 4 sessions which began on May 31 and concluded on August 6th. Our classes were scheduled around the Texas Sailing Association's Youth Circuit Regattas. CSC is a racing club and the goal of our junior program is to provide a means by which young sailors do not just learn to sail but can also become actively involved in the sport of competitive sailboat racing. A total of 61 junior sailors participated in one or more of our class sessions. Interest in our junior classes has increased interest in the club, with many new families joining CSC in order to enroll their children in the classes – in fact, four new families joined in August just so their children could participate in the last summer class session. This summer's program was a great success and laid a foundation on which we hope to build in the years to come.

JUNIOR RACING: Fourteen of our junior sailors have participated in at least one TSA Youth Circuit Regatta this season. This number includes 9 new Opti Green Fleeters who have joined the CSC Junior Race Team this year and participated in their first regatta. Thirteen CSC juniors participated in CSC’s regatta during Dallas Race Week and 7 sailors made the trek to Houston to compete in Texas Youth Race Week. Our more experienced racing sailors have also performed quite well this year on both the TSA Youth Circuit and in US Sailing Youth Championship qualifying events.

Paul Denison finished 4th in Area F Smythe Qualifier at HYC, a few points out from qualifying for an invite to the National Championship event. Paul also did well at Dallas Youth Race Week, finishing 2nd overall, and most recently finished 5th overall in the Laser Radial Class at Texas Youth Race Week in Houston, which is a US Sailing Junior Olympic Festival. Paul’s first place finish in one race also entitled him to one of the coveted Daily Firsts T-shirts. Paul's consistent finishes during the season has also elevated him to 1st place in the current rankings of Laser Radial sailors on the TSA Youth Circuit.

At Texas Race Week, Will Pierce showed how much he has improved over the summer with regatta finishes of 2nd, 3rd and 9th in the 30 boat Optimist Green Fleet fleet, placing him 4th overall in the three regatta event. Will also had 3 first place finishes, giving him claim to three stars on his Daily First T-shirt. Zander Le Bel, participating in his first regatta, also made huge advances as he quickly got the feel of the race course. Zander’s progress was recognized by the Green Fleet coaches and he was given the “Most Improved” award at the TCYC regatta. Moving up to the competitive Opti Red, White and Blue Fleet, Masie Comen and Chris McGee improved with each regatta as they became accustomed to the larger 60 boat fleet and more aggressive sailing. Rounding out our Texas Race Week competitors were Cameron Keehn and Aaron Comen, both of whom had some good finishes in the tough competition found at a US Sailing Junior Olympic Festival.

PARENTS MEETING: We had a good showing at the Parents Meeting on July 30th. The parents who were in attendance signed up for volunteer duties, but for a successful off season junior program, we need more of you to volunteer. The coaches are retained only for the summer, so after that it is up to the parents to plan, organize and conduct any junior activities

We need more volunteers for:

1. Rescue Boat Duty for Sunday Afternoon Sailing.

2. Help With Maintaining the Junior Shed and Equipment.

3. Help With Junior Social and Entertainment Activities.

4. Also, since CSC’s Junior Program is focused on developing junior racing sailors, we need more parents who will support their child’s participation in local and statewide regattas. You do not need to own your own boat, as CSC has club boats available for regattas.

For more information on how to volunteer contact Sandy Denison at 214-826-998 or ed@cscsailing.org

PROGRAM SCHEDULE: The schedule for upcoming Junior Events and Activities is as follows:

1. Sunday Afternoon Junior Sailing. Beginning Sunday, August 8 at 1:00pm, and on consecutive Sundays at the same time, a rescue boat manned by parent volunteers will be on the water from 1:30 to 4:30. Since coaches will not be available, parents are responsible for directly supervising their children and assisting them with rigging, launching, docking and de-rigging. Parents must be aware of their child's certification level and assure compliance with those limitations and with CSC’s rules for the use of junior club boats. Safety is our number one concern and the certification levels have been set based on the coaches’ assessment of your child's skill level and ability to handle emergency situations on the water.
We currently need volunteer parents to man the rescue boat for August 22, September 12, 19 and 26 and from October 10th forward. We need two volunteers for each day as you will be paired with another parent, one with some rescue experience and the other to assist and learn. Contact Sandy Denison at ed@cscsailing.org to volunteer for one of these dates.

2. Rescue Boat Operation/Junior Boat Rigging Demonstration. On Sunday August 8th at 12:30 p.m., we will demonstrate for parents the proper procedures for operation of the club 15” Whaler, which will be the rescue boat available for use during Sunday Afternoon Junior Sailing. We will also go over for parents the proper procedures for rigging, de-rigging and properly putting away the club junior boats. Your child was taught this during the summer classes, but it will be the parents’ responsibility to assure their child's continued compliance.

3. Regattas Open to Juniors:

August 21–22: Cannonball Run, Palacios Yacht Club (TSA Youth Circuit Regatta)

September 11–12: Ol' Man of the Sea, Fort Worth Boat Club (TSA Youth Circuit Regatta)

September 18-19: Cressy Cup SEISA Qualifier, HYC (Lasers-HS Single handed Championship)

October 2–3: Endless Summer, Seabrook Sailing Club (TSA Youth Circuit Regatta)

October 2: State Fair Regatta, CSC

October 23: Changes in Latitude, Corpus Christi Yacht Club (TSA Youth Circuit Regatta)

4. Fall Junior Open House/Halloween Party (Tentative): Sunday, October 31, in the afternoon
