JUNE 4TH FIRST FRIDAY “PIRATES OF THE POLKA” REVIEW

We had a ripping good time with lady and fellow pirates, yummy tidbits, rummy coladas and other grog! The gorgeous sunset and great accordion music kept us all entranced. What a kick! See photos on the website – do you recognize any of these pirates?

SPECIAL OLYMPICS 2004 REPORT

The Special Olympics regatta for 2004 happened on a lovely Wednesday evening at the club. All the Unified Partners and athletes had a wonderful time. We actually tried to sail level two, which puts the athletes on the helm for half of the race. Several athletes did this successfully, and the other athletes participated at the beginning level. Awards were given, and the event was a success. Special thanks goes to Tracy Aber who took over at the last minute and ran the regatta flawlessly. Bob Gough ran the races, and Renee Comen served dinner to all that participated. All the Unified partners had great experiences with the athletes, and participation from club members was again, enthusiastic.

This is my last year coordinating this event. I thank you all for the opportunity to serve as the Special Olympics regatta organizer. If anyone would like to step up and organize this event in the future, I would be happy to give you all the advice and materials I have. Please consider serving the club and area Special Olympians in this way. Please contact Steve Comen or the current commodore with any questions or comments.

BUTTERFLY WRANGLE REGATTA REPORT

The 35th annual Wrangle Regatta was held at White Rock Lake on June 12th and 13th, with both Butterflys and Lasers participating. Wind? You bet!! Lots of it. It was blowing from 15-25, perhaps more at times. That is a lot of wind for those boats. Although, the Lasers always claim that is what they like. You could see the bottoms of many boats, as even some very experienced skippers went over. The Flying Scotts Fleet was the race committee and it kept them very busy.

On Sunday, while the first race was fairly windy, in the second race, we hit such a lull that no boats were even moving for a while.

In the Butterfly Fleet, Bruce Faust came in first, Gary Eppink was 2nd and Bob Biegler took 3rd.

In the Lasers, Jennifer Jidkins was 1st, Tracy Aber 2nd and Bruce Moore came in 3rd. The girls admitted, however, that Bruce did a certain amount of coaching, and helping them during the race.

It was a fun regatta.

BUTTERFLY SINGLE HANDED NATIONALS RESULTS

White Rock Lake was well represented at the Butterfly Single Handed Nationals in Lake Lotawana, Missouri on June 18-20. Six of our skippers attended the regatta and there were 5 that finished in the top ten places.

The winds on Saturday were enough to give everyone fits. Shifty, shifty and shifty. As you can imagine, later on the dock, there were all kinds of horror stories from each skipper. On Sunday, the wind was light, but more readable. Eric Faust won the regatta, beating his dad Bruce Faust who came in 2nd. Between the two of them, they won 5 of the 7 races in the regatta. Bruce also won the tune-up race on Friday. Frank Richards came in 7th, followed by Susan Justice in 9th and Gary Eppink finished 10th. Tom Charland, as they say in horse racing, was an also ran at
14th. Susan also won a trophy for being 2nd woman.

JUNIOR PROGRAM

Our Summer 2004 Junior Sailing Program is now in full swing.

Our first two junior sail classes were bursting to capacity with young sailors eager to get out on the water. Be sure to say hello to our junior coaches Megan Chrowstowski and Evan Daugherty who are doing a great job working with our kids.

Intermediate Class- Spaces Open: If you can fit it in your summer schedule, I would like to encourage CSC Junior Sailors who have prior experience or have enrolled in Sessions I or II to sign up for the Intermediate Class which will run from Monday July 5 through Thursday July 15 (Friday July 16 is a travel day for our coaches and sailors who are going to Texas Race Week in Houston). To give you some incentive to sign up, we are offering a $50 multi-class discount for kids who sign up for more than one class session. Thus the cost for those re-upping for a second session will be $150. The Intermediate Class will also be limited to about 20 sailors so your child will receive more individual instruction than in the larger classes.

The Intermediate Class runs for 9 days from Monday July 5 through Thursday July 15. Friday July 16 is a travel day for our coaches and sailors who are going to Texas Race Week in Houston. In the past we have had a number of sailors who after attending a beginner and then the intermediate class have gone on to compete in the Optimist Green Fleet at Texas Race Week, which is a US Sailing Junior Olympic Festival. For more information on Texas Youth Race Week see: http://www.tcyc.org/home/TYRW_Home.htm

If the Intermediate Class does not fit your schedule please consider the Summer ending class from July 26 through August 6 - the same discount will apply if it is your second class of the summer.

Please let Sandy Denison know if you would like to sign your child up by calling 214-826-3998 or emailing him at ed@cscsailing.org.

Junior Racing: CSC juniors have also performed well in recent regattas. Masie Comen placed first in the Optimist Green Fleet at the Rush Creek venue of Dallas Race Week and is now moving up to the Red/White/Blue fleet. At Rush Creek Cameron Keehn and Will Pierce placed 3rd and 4th respectively, with Caroline Keehn and Aaron Comen also finishing well. Twelve CSC juniors competed in the CSC venue with Will Pierce, Mary Shepherd and Cameron Keehn finishing in the medals and with Caroline Keehn, Aaron Comen , Maisey Horn and Meyer Thalheimer not far behind. Alex Nash should also be congratulated for his 5th place finish in the tough Optimist Red/White/Blue fleet. At both the Rush Creek and CSC venues of Dallas Race week Paul Denison continued his strong finishes by place 2nd in both regattas. Paul now stands at the top of the Laser Radial standings on the TSA Junior Circuit going into Texas Race Week. Paul also did well in the Smythe Qualifier finishing one point out of third and narrowly missing out on the opportunity to go the national regatta, which is US Sailing’s Single handed junior national championship.

To keep up-to-date on CSC junior activities, have your name added to the CSC Junior Parent email list by sending an email to ed@cscsailing.org with the subject line reading "Add me to the CSC Junior Parent email list."

Program Schedule: The schedule for the remainder of our summer 2004 junior program is as follows:

July 5 – 15 - Session III: Intermediate/Advanced Sailing/Racing Class
July 16-24 - Texas Youth Race Week, Galveston Bay
July 26 - August 6 - Session IV: General Beginner/Intermediate Sailing Class

Registration Forms for the class sessions are posted on the CSC website and in the clubhouse. If you have any questions contact ed@cscsailing.org. For more information on Texas Youth Race Week see: http://www.tcyc.org/home/TYRW_Home.htm

CURRENT POSTED CSC SERVICE REQUESTS

“FOR THE LOVE OF THE LAKE”

On July 10, 2004, the Second Saturday Shoreline Spruce-up is 100! Thousands of volunteers have been helping to keep White Rock Lake’s shoreline, park, and lake clean for 100 consecutive months. The Corinthian Sailing Club is one of 44 groups who have adopted a portion of the shoreline and park to reduce the litter and make White Rock Lake safe and enjoyable for everyone.

For the Love of the Lake is a grass-roots group of volunteers working to improve White Rock Lake in cooperation with the Dallas Park and Recreation Department. In addition to shoreline clean up, and with contributions from the community, FTLOTL has purchased 500 trashcans, 32 benches with bike racks, 20 drinking fountains, 5 bicycles for the Park Police, the playground equipment for the T.P. Hill children’s playground, and many other items to improve White Rock Lake Park.
