ICE CREAM IS FUN! FUN! FUN! IN THE SUMMERTIME
August 6 - Eskimo Beach Party was truly a gift of a
beautiful day. The First Friday was very well attended.
Renee & Mark Pinkston made sure that kids of all ages could
enjoy the opportunity of delicious chilling in August at the Clubhouse.
What a lot of tough decisions to make with so many ice cream flavors
from which to choose! Thirsty adults indulged in the glacial pleasure
of lovely frozen margaritas. Thanks to Renee & Mark Pinkston
for their hard work and help in handling this event.

The Club Has a New Weather Station
The weather station that we have used for almost 30 years has finally
given up and been retired. In its place is a shiny, new weather
station that we purchased from Texas Weather Instruments. This is
a state-of-the-art all digital system. Here is a description of
some of the capabilities of the system.
Wind readings at 1 second intervals. You can also display one
minute averages.
Air and water temperatures. The system will also display windchill
and heat index.
Relative Humidity.
Barometric pressure with an indication of whether it is rising
or falling.
There is a lightning indicator that provides an indication of
the counts that have occurred over the last minute. The count
is an indication of the distance and intensity of the strike.
A weak, nearby strike and a strong, distant strike could have
the same count. The unit is quite sensitive and probably indicates
strikes as far away as 200 miles. We will need to watch this for
a while to get an idea of what count level indicates lightning
strikes occurring in the area.
There is a crib sheet on the wall below the display that further
explains the system.
We have been provided software that will allow us to look at history
of various readings, monitor local radar, and put CSC weather station
data on our website. This is being evaluated by the CSC board. We
would like your input on whether or not you think this is worthwhile.
See next article.
CSC thanks David Patterson who underwrote the cost of our system.
He is the owner of Texas Weather Instruments and long time sailor
at DCYC. You may also remember David as PRO for last years Leukemia
Cup Dinghy Regatta at CSC. To learn more about TWI and our new system
checkout their website - http://www.txwx.com.
Membership Poll on Weather Station Enhancements
We have been provided software that will allow us to look at historical
trends of various readings, monitor local radar, and put CSC weather
station data on our website. This software is very powerful and
will allow us to display almost any cut of the data being generated
by the weather station, both at the club or on our website. It will
allow us to grab virtually anything off the internet and display
it at the club.
Examples of the data displays may be found on our website - www.cscsailing.org/wx3.html.
This is real data from the evening of Sept. 7. It was clear, pleasant
and breezy. The historical trend charts are not complete because
the computer had only been running a little over 2 hours when the
images were generated.
The initial screen you see is an example of what could be shown
on a continuing basis on the CSC website. This particular example
includes a 24 hour look at one minute average wind speed, peak wind
speed, wind direction, barometric pressure, air and water temperatures
and lightning counts. It also includes a wind rose which shows the
wind direction over the last hour.
Examples of the real-time display at the dock can be accessed from
the link at the bottom of the page above - www.cscsailing.org/wx3.html.
The first screen shows three hour trends for one minute average
wind speed, peak wind speed, wind direction, and lightning counts.
Also, 24 hour data is shown for barometric pressure and air temperatures.
The second screen shows real-time regional weather radar and weather
maps downloaded from the Internet.
This all sounds great, but it is not free.
First, we need a computer and display running 24 hrs a day at the
dock. There is a hardware and installation cost associated with
the computer installation of between $100 and $300. We will need
to find a club member who is interested in tending and maintaining
this system. Also, the system could be a target for vandalism and
theft.
Increased capabilities can be had at increased costs. For the above
mentioned computer installation, one could view historical trend
charts similar to those described above. To be able to download
the radar and weather maps and to put the weather station data on
the CSC website, we would need a dedicated Internet connection.
This would entail an additional cost of about $500 the first year
and a continuing cost of about $400 per year. While these costs
don't suggest an increase in your dues, they are expenses that your
dues will cover.
Let us know what you think. This survey solicits your opinion
on a mid-year decision that will impact the club's future expenses.
Is this worth the added expense and effort? Are you will willing
to help install and maintain the system? Email us at commodore@cscsailing.org,
respond online at the bottom of the webpage referenced above, or
send us a note to the CSC PO Box listed at the bottom of this newsletter.
We need your inputs by the end of the month as we intend to act
on this at the October board meeting.
LUKEMIA CUP 2005
Plans are made and committees are being formed now in order to
make this event a great success in fund-raising for the fight against
leukemia and lymphoma. You have opportunities to guarantee the success
by serving on a committee and by participating in sailing, fund-raising,
food preparation, gathering auction items, publicity and gaining
sponsors.
Ralph Jones and Mark Smith are co-chairmen and will work with committees
to make sure that all functions are on schedule. Please think about
how you can best serve and check the CSC web site for committee
contacts.
