Renew your Membership Now

Frank Richards reports that membership renewal for 2002 is in full swing. We finished last year with 284 members. To date, 225 have renewed and 17 have resigned. We also have 15 new members.

That leaves 42 members that we have not heard from. The renewal was due March 15 and you guys are now delinquent. The board voted to suspend delinquent members in accordance with the by-laws. Suspension notices will be going out to those who have not paid dues and fees by April 15. If payment is not received by May 15, you will be expelled. This is not good! Please save yourself and the club the aggravation, expense and embarrassment of this process. Contact the Rear Commodore for Membership, Frank Richards, at 214-827-4434, frank-r@texas.net or 7274 Williamson Cir, Dallas, TX 75214 if you have any questions. Or better yet, just send your money.

Combinations Have Changed

The combinations to the gates and workboats were changed on April 6. The new combinations are on the back of your new membership card. The work boat combination is the password to the roster on the website, which has also been changed. Please do not give the new combinations to anyone. Refer them to Frank Richards if they have not received their membership packet.

Racing News

Chris Dukeminier, Rear Commodore for Race, reports a good amount of activity in March considering the blustery weather we've had. Corinthians, Lightnings and Flying Scots have turned out fleets on several Sunday afternoons. Our Sunday program is getting off to a healthy start for the new season. Special thanks go to the Snipe fleet for fielding a race committee on Easter Sunday.

Recent Events

April 6 - Spruce Up Day – A few hardy souls braved threatening (and some actual) rain to repair docks, plumbing and electrical under Mo Berry’s able direction.

April 7 - Splash Day – Heavy rains effectively splashed out Splash Day. Most of the attendees were observed bringing beer but no sails to the clubhouse.

April 27 - CSC Boat Show
April 29 - Adult Sailing Lessons Start
May 1 - Wednesday Night Fun Races Start
May 3 - First Friday Party

April 27 - CSC Boat Show

The annual Corinthian Sailing Club Boat Show is open to the public. This is a great opportunity to promote your fleet and the club. Activities will include sailboat rides, wooden boats, kayaks, canoes, and remote control boats. Lunch will be served for $5 per person. If you would like to help, contact Prater and Nancy Monning .

The March of Dimes Walkathon is also scheduled for Saturday, April 27th at 8:00 am. Most of the walking should wrap up by 9. This might bring some additional foot traffic and be really good for the Boat Show. Be aware that the Dallas Police who block Lawther Drive often exhibit little interest or imagination in directing you to the Club; however the gate should be open from Northcliff Drive.

May 1 - Wednesday Night Fun Races Start

The Wednesday night fun races are back by popular demand. This popular and fun activity will start on May 1st. The races will start about 7PM each Wednesday, and the series will run through Labor Day. This is an excellent opportunity to ease into racing your boat in a low pressure, supportive environment. Chris would like to extend a special invitation to our novice sailors to participate in this event. So come out and sail your own boat or crew for someone else on theirs. If you have questions or would like to help run the races contact Chris Dukeminier.

May 3 - First Friday Party

The Pier Rears for Entertainment, Prater and Nancy Monning , will sponsor a party the first Friday of each summer month through August. The parties will be very casual with hors d'oeuvres, soft drinks, a specialty drink of the night, and light entertainment. Cost will be $5 per person. Come out and enjoy the beautiful evenings on White Rock with your favorite friends. 6 – 9 PM.

May 11 - Special Olympics

The Third Annual White Rock Special Olympics Regatta will be raced on Saturday May 11, 2002. . Sailor-volunteers are needed to be unified partners, do race committee, or just to come out and be a cheerleader! Please contact Joni Seifrick at 214.553.0005 or jseifri@pisd.edu or joni@seifrick.com. if you are interested in participating.

What's New on the CSC Website

Spring activities are starting to shape up. Check out details on the juniors sailing education program, adult sailing classes, Wednesday night fun races, the new first Friday parties at the dock, and the Special Olympics regatta.

The new 2002 - 2003 Sunday Race Sailing Instructions and the Race Calendar have been added to the site. The new Sailing Instructions became effective April 7. Note that the Sailing Instructions now require a red flag for protests.

The CSC membership roster has been updated with the information received during the renewal process. The password has been changed to the work boat combination on the back of your new membership card. To print the roster, put in a large "Page Size" (e.g. 500) and the entire roster will be displayed. This allows you to print the roster.

Kelly Gough won the Flying Scot Mid-Winters Regatta Championship Fleet and Red Dog Jones won the Challenger Fleet. Frank Richards came in fourth in the Challenger Fleet. Race results and regatta photos have been posted.

CSC Women's Racing Program (WRP) 2002

The WRP is designed for experienced female racers who desire to improve their racing skills, knowledge and confidence on the water.

If you are new to sailing, we encourage you to first learn how to sail by attending the CSC Adult Sailing Classes. We also encourage you to gain a fundamental understanding of racing by participating in the Sunday afternoon races or the summer Wednesday evening race series. Just come on down to the dock, or give Kai Kunnapas or Susan Justus a call and they will do their best to hook you up with a crew position on a boat or find ways for you to become involved in the CSC racing.

The 2002 WRP will run for 5 Saturday sessions: June 1, 8, 22 and July 6, 13. All sessions will start with boat rigging (Laser) at 9:30 am and run until 12:00 noon.

Requirements for the program are:

·         CSC or other TSA Sailing Club membership

·         $50.00 fee

·         Life Jacket

·         Knowledge of basic boat handling, sailing skills/terminology, and the rules of racing.

·         Minimum of 6 months of continuos racing experience within the past year.

Note: If you do not meet the last two qualifications, we encourage you to take the Adult Sailing class and begin racing, but you are also welcome to audit the WRP. For a donation of $20.00 to the Carol Gough Sailing Education Fund, you are welcome to attend all of the on-the-dock instructional sessions and help our coaches with setting the courses, rescues, running races, etc. By participating in this manner you will begin to build your racing skills. A detailed schedule and registration form will be available by the end of April on the Club website or you can contact us for more information.

Junior Sailing Program

Junior Sail Camps: June 3-14; June 17-28 and July 1-12

Due to instructor staffing and equipment limitations, the previously announced junior sailing camp schedule has been altered slightly to add a third camp session and to change the dates for the July Session and the Advanced Race Session.

Session I will be held from June 3-14 and will culminate with CSC’s hosting of a Texas Sailing Association Juniors’ Circuit Regatta the weekend of June 15-16. Preference for registration to Session I will be given to Juniors who have attended a previous CSC sail camp or plan to compete in the TSA Junior Circuit Regatta hosted by CSC on June 15-16. The emphasis in Session I will be preparing our junior sailors to compete in CSC’s regatta. Session II will be held from June 17-28 and will be geared more to beginner and intermediate level sailors. Session III will be held from July 1-12 and, while it will still be appropriate for beginners, Session III will be more race oriented than Session II, with an eye toward preparing our junior sailors for participation in Texas Race Week later that month from July 20-27.

Registration forms for Sessions I, II, and III can be obtained by contacting Sandy Denison at sandy@sdenison.net. Forms will also be posted on the website and made available in the clubhouse. Register early for the best chance at securing a spot in the session of your choice. As in past years each camp day will begin at 9am and end at 2pm. Your child’s safety is our first concern; therefore, due to instructor staffing limitations, each session will be limited to approximately 17 juniors. The fee will be $125 for each 9am-2pm two week camp session. For a limited number of juniors interested in race training, we will be offering two extra hours of intensive race training by the coach from 2 to 4 PM each day for an additional fee of $50 per session.

To register for the camps the junior must have a parent or grandparent who is either a full or associate member of CSC.

Advanced Race Training Camp and Texas Race Week: July 15-27

A one-week Advanced Race Training Camp will be held from July 15-18 in preparation for the July 20-27 Texas Juniors Race Week in Houston. Friday the 19th will be a travel day for our coach and juniors to Houston. This camp session will be limited to junior sailors serious about racing who plan to attend Texas Race Week. The camp fee will be $125 for the one week session which will run from 9 to 4 each day and will include on the water coaching during Texas Race Week. For registration information contact Sandy Denison 214-826-3998.

            AYC Jr. Roadrunner Regatta

CSC juniors Myles Busch, Tommy Hudson and Paul Denison attended the Austin Yacht Club’s TSA Junior Circuit "Roadrunner" Regatta on March 23-24. With winds gusting to 30 and swells of 3 feet on Lake Travis, it was not a regatta for the faint hearted. The conditions proved somewhat severe for our Optimist Green Fleeters, but Tommy and Myles should be proud that they were able to get out on the racecourse to compete in such conditions. It was an experience both can build on and they had a great time too boot. Paul notched consistent top ten overall finishes in the Combined Optimist Red/Blue/White Fleets and he took home a trophy finishing fourth among the 11-12 year old Blue Fleeters, missing 3rd by a point. The regatta was attended by the best junior sailors in Texas, all of whom will descend on CSC to compete with all our juniors on June 15-16 during the TSA Junior Circuit’s stop at our club. Let’s all start practicing now!!
