Junior
Sailing Program
JUNIOR
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The
formal 2002 Junior Sailing Program has been completed.
During June and July, CSC conducted three two-week sail camps and
a one-week advanced race camp. Forty-six
sailors attended the camps, of which 23 were new to sailing.
CSC also hosted a TSA Junior Circuit Regatta on June 15-16
attended by 56 junior competitors from throughout Texas and at which 14
CSC sailors competed. At
the end of July CSC coaches also accompanied five of our junior sailors
and their parents to Texas Race Week in Houston.
Many
thanks to Jimmy Sturgul and Bryan Garrsion who coached our kids during
the camps and to CSC juniors Joey DeCosta and Paul Denison who assisted
Jimmy and Bryan as student coaches.
We also could not have pulled off the camps without the help of
John Diggins, Bob Manning, Bob Harrington and Bill and Gina Wilson.
TEXAS
RACE WEEK:
CSC
juniors Joey DeCosta, Brandon Guy, Paul Denison, Kendra Brown and
Charles Patten attended the three-regatta Texas Juniors Race Week on
Galveston Bay from July 20-28. Congratulations
to Joey who medaled in the Laser Radial class and to Kendra who brought
home a trophy in the Optimist Green Fleet.
Each of our other junior sailors raced competitively in their
respective classes and gained valuable experience in the wind, waves and
chop on the Gulf Coast.
NATIONAL
EVENTS:
CSC
juniors also attended several national events this summer.
After Texas Race Week Paul Denison left for the Optimist
Nationals in Sarasota, Florida held from July 28 - August 2 to sail
against two hundred of the best Optimist sailors in the country.
Joey DeCosta also made the long trek to LaSalle, Michigan to
compete as crew for Scott Anderson in the Lightning North Americans.
CSC juniors were also represented at the Flying Scot Nationals in
Pensacola, Florida, with Scott Wade crewing for his dad Richard who
finished 4th overall in the Championship fleet and with Masie
Comen skippering her boat to a 5th place finish in the
Women’s Division.
UPCOMING
JUNIOR REGATTAS:
There
will be three Texas Sailing Association Junior Circuit Regattas in north
Texas during the fall. The
first will be held at Fort Worth Boat Club during the weekend of
September 14-15 which will be followed two weeks later on the weekend of
September 28-29 by a regatta at Rush Creek Yacht Club on Lake Ray
Hubbard. The end of the
season regatta and award banquet will be held at Chandlers Landing Yacht
Club on October 26, which is also located on Lake Ray Hubbard.
CSC
juniors should also consider participating in this club’s State Fair
Regatta scheduled for October 12th.
CLUB
BOAT USE AND CONTINUED JUNIOR SAILING:
CSC
would like to encourage junior sailors to sail all year round and not
just during the summer camps. As
a club CSC focuses on racing and we view our junior program as an
extension of our commitment to promotion of the sport of competitive
sailboat racing. We thus
want and encourage our junior sailors to travel to junior regattas at
other clubs and to become involved in the club’s racing program.
Opportunities to crew exist for our race-ready juniors during the
Sunday fleet races and – if enough juniors show an interest – a
separate course will be set on Sunday for juniors sailing in Optimists
and Laser Radials.
With
regard to the continued use by juniors of club boats outside the camp
setting, CSC is currently in the process of reviewing its policy in this
regard. This review has
been prompted not only by safety concerns, but also by recent problems
we have experienced with club boats and equipment not being properly
cared for and put away after use.
For instance, sometime prior to Sunday September 9th,
Optimist “N”, which is one of our better boats, was left untied to
the pier, with its sprit pole lying on the dock and with its sails
stowed crumpled up in the shed, as opposed to being properly folded and
rolled. Had we experienced
one of our periodic floods, that Opti and its sprit pole would have
floated off down the lake. While
it should go without saying, storing a sail crumpled up substantially
shortens its useful life. This
is only one example of many over the past several months involving both
the Optimists and the Lasers.
To
begin to address these concerns, as an interim measure pending
completion of our policy review, we have decided to begin requiring
juniors who have been certified to sail club boats to sign a log sheet
each time that a club boat is taken out.
The log sheet will be placed in a notebook to the right inside
the double doors of the junior shed.
Also, we have decided that only Optimists “A” through “K”
and Lasers “1" through ”4" will be made available for
general use. The 420,
Optimists “L”, “M”, “N’ and “O” and Lasers “5"
and “6" may not be used unless specific permission is given by
the CSC Commodore of Sailing Education.
The Optimists and Lasers stored inside the Junior Shed may only
be used for regattas as assigned by the Education Commodore.
For safety reasons, juniors may only sail the class of boat for
which they have been certified during camp.
If your junior has lost or did or did not receive a certificate
at the end of sail camp please contact the Commodore of Sailing
Education.
Parents
are reminded that they must supervise their junior sailor during
the entire time that a club boat is being sailed and that as parents
they are responsible both for their child’s safety (including
rescue if necessary) and for ensuring that their junior takes proper
care of club boats and equipment. Before
their junior pushes away from the dock parents are responsible for
checking to make sure that club boats are properly rigged. This includes
ensuring that the Opti mast tie down is secured. Failure to tie down the
mast will cause irreparable damage to the mast thwart in the event of a
capsize. After their child
is finished sailing parents are also responsible for ensuring that club
boats and equipment used by their junior are de-rigged and properly put
away.
Upon
completing the review of our overall policy on the use of club boats, a
written statement of that new policy will be issued.
